Issue
The Norway Inn is an historic and iconic pub restaurant in Cornwall. Originally a lime kiln and a four-roomed cottage, sold by Lady Bassett for the sum of £425 ‘lock, stock and barrel’ in 1899, the Norway Inn is now a St Austell Brewery tenancy, serving holiday makers and locals. It is also used for flexible working and event spaces. In 2020 it underwent a refurbishment that needed to stay true to the pub’s historic character while bringing the décor up to date. The refurbishment, which had a tight timescale, also needed to provide fresh, welcoming, comfortable and flexible spaces for differing clientele.
Approach
As the Norway Inn used to host Norwegian wood traders, the management wanted to retain the authentic aesthetics of a wooden floor, but with the benefits of comfort underfoot, ease of maintenance, cleanliness and durability. The Lounge at The Norway Inn is the main dining area and Mark Holden, Inn Cornwall Company Director, said: “We wanted a light, flexible and clean floor in The Lounge that looks good to guests who brunch, through to guests who are visiting in the evening for dinner”.
Solution
Altro Ensemble luxury vinyl tile (LVT), in Tobacco Limed Striking Oak, was recommended and installed by Eden Flooring throughout the new dining area, which has a combination of bench, high stool and table seating areas for people to work, meet, and eat. Mark Holden said: “this was a really bold move for us as there is a lot of emotion and history attached to the previous restaurant, but we are delighted with the end result.”
