Walls: perfecting the art

Roger Moore, our European Regional Technical Service Manager, is back once again. This time, Roger’s looking at one of the services we offer; the Altro training school.

A while back, I wrote about the value of training. As I said then, I believe formal training drastically shortens the amount of time it takes to get staff up to speed and instils lasting enthusiasm and expertise.

We’ve been talking about our walls a lot recently, in particular about our 36-year history and a technical team who together have over 100 years’ walls experience. So I’m going to go into the Altro walls training school in more detail – what to expect on the day, and what you get out of attending.

Our training takes place at our head office in Letchworth Garden City, in a purpose-built training area. It’s a two-day course, on both days the focus is on our walls systems and installation methods. We also run a one-day Altro Whiterock training school that focuses on the hot welding of Altro Whiterock, we always recommend that the installation course is completed first, before you return to learn about welding techniques. It’s like running before walking otherwise!

To make sure you get plenty of one-to-one time with our trainer, there will be a maximum of seven other people alongside you on the day.

The day starts in our training room where we’ll talk through the Altro ranges, starting with Altro Whiterock hygienic walls system, Altro doorsets, and moving onto Altro Fortis, our wall, door and corner protection system. This familiarises you with the different systems, ensuring you know which works best for each type of application area. We cover each part of the systems, including trims and accessories.

Once you’ve seen all the parts of the jigsaw, we look at how it all goes together, including specific finishes, such as CNC routing and window detailing. We also take a look at some case studies; installations the training team has worked on personally, meaning we can go through the challenges for each job and how we overcame them, as well as going through the best practice installation methods. Safety when handling the systems is paramount, so we cover that in detail. Maintenance is also covered, helping you answer any questions on site, and pass on information about looking after the systems to reduce issues later down the line.

Then it’s time to roll our sleeves up and get stuck in. You get the opportunity to put everything we’ve just gone through into practice. This includes installing a sheet using a two-part joint strip and Altro Whiterock Flexijoint, thermoforming and installing around and into a window. Our training is deliberately ‘non-clinical’; we all know that when on-site, installation isn’t always going to be straight-forward so neither are all of our surfaces! We’ll look at some common problems, like a wonky ceiling, and how to overcome them.

We encourage questions throughout; the sessions are as interactive as possible, but we leave plenty of time at the end to give you time to go through anything again. After the sessions, you’re welcome to get in touch with us if you ever have any queries.

We run all our courses regularly so if you’re interested in attending the Altro walls training school, or would like more information about our floors or resins training, please get in touch. We’ll look forward to seeing you!
